“On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. ‘Sovereign Lord,’ they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.’ Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”’
Acts 4:23-30 NIV

This is a passage from our morning Bible study. I worked today, and the Internet was down, so I was unable to attend the virtual Bible study. I did not let that stop me, though. I still opened my Bible and read the passage we were going study today. And here was this passage.

To set the scene, Peter and John had been arrested and questioned by the Sanhedrin about their preaching of Jesus. Now the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 4:2). This all started when Peter healed the man born lame at the gate. This man was greater than 40 years old (Acts 4:22). Every person at the temple had known this lame man for many years as he was placed at the gate to ask for money. So, for the people to see him WALK in with Peter and John amazed them. Peter, led by the Holy Spirit addressed the crowd and let them know that it was through the name of Jesus Christ that this man was healed (Acts 4:10). Jesus is still in the Miricle business today.

The Sanhedrin did not know what to do with them at this point because of the ones that heard their message and believed (Acts 4:4). Their response:

”When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13 NIV

The Sanhedrin was made up of highly educated people. It amazed them that Peter and John were so knowledgable.

”Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.”
Acts 4:18 NIV

Now to the meat of this message; Prayer is a powerful weapon. Just as we see here:

”After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”
Acts 4:31 NIV

Prayer works for any situation and any problem. This pandemic is a scary thing, and we should take precautions, but prayer should be a top priority. The ground may not shake, but as believers in Christ, we do have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and miracles can still happen, through the name of Jesus Christ.

Have a Blessed Day,

Chaplain Howie
